Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

About Us Section
About Us Image

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an initiative under the Skill India Mission that evaluates and certifies the skills and knowledge individuals have acquired through informal or non-formal learning methods. The program aims to recognize and validate the potential of individuals who may lack formal education but possess substantial work experience. By providing official certification, RPL bridges the gap between traditional education and practical expertise, enabling individuals to access better job opportunities and higher wages.

The process of RPL involves mobilization and registration of candidates, followed by an orientation program to familiarize them with the process and its benefits. Candidates then undergo assessments based on national occupational standards (NOS), evaluating their theoretical and practical skills. Successful candidates receive a government-recognized certificate and a monetary reward under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

What is RPL?

Types of Learning

Types of Learning

Formal Learning

  • Takes place through programmes or courses of study delivered in an organised, formal way by education providers.
  • Attracts awards or credits and is sometimes referred to as certified or accredited learning.
  • Recognition is given to prior learning rather than accreditation.

Non-formal Learning

  • Takes place alongside or outside the mainstream systems of education and training.
  • May be assessed but does not normally lead to formal certification.
  • Examples include planned learning and training activities in the workplace, voluntary sector, or community-based settings.

Informal Learning

  • Occurs through life and work experience (e.g., ‘on-the-job’ training).
  • Does not lead to certification.
  • Flexible and self-directed, allowing individuals to learn at their own pace.
  • Often involves peer discussions, observations, and trial-and-error methods.
